lighting blog task

image 1
-There is low-key back/under lighting.
-The lighting is used to show the side of the character's body and face and to create a shadow for the rest of the body, this shows suspicion and mystery.
-smoke in the image connotes that the character is relaxed and poised.

image 2

-low-key lighting suggests the character might be abandoned or is in need of help.
-There is also top-down lighting which is being used which vividly shows the characters face and glamorizes her face.
-The top-down lighting also shows the character's innocence.

Image 3

-high-key lighting is used throughout this film poster. More specifically, top lighting is used in this poster as you can see shadows under the characters eye in the poster.
-This would make the person look much more dominating and powerful as there is a clear possible spotlight being shined on the character.

image 4

-you can tell that low-key lighting has been used as well as top lighting.
-This presents the character in the poster as a possible antagonist as a result of the way the characters face is half left as a shadow, making the identity of him remain anonymous because he may be a possible criminal.

image 5
-There is low-key lighting in this image as we see the shadows as a streak across the character.
-There is backlighting of an object which runs across the character this could signify the danger the character is in. As she also has a frightened expression on her face.

image 6
-We can see that low-key lighting has been used.
-In combination with the image, the low-key lighting creates an intimate and romantic atmosphere.
-Also, there is light going through the blinds creating an effect of warmth.

Editing blog task - 750 words

This is a clip from the opening scene "HEAT" which is a robbery shootout. The scene starts with a medium shot covering half of the body of the protagonist and the camera slowly travels as the person walks in the building, in addition to this the music in the background was diegetic and the pace of the music matched with action because the sound in the background used was very fast and set a sense of suspense for the audience that some sort of action is going to take place. The camera then moves on to a close up shot of the mans shoes whilst he is walking in and then a crane shot is used by the director to show the setting and we as audience can see an office with people working ,the crane shot shows and gives the audience hints about the setting and where this particular scene is going to take place. The camera focuses on a few characters which gives a hint to the audience that these are the people in a team and are going to work on a mission, in the background we can hear a telephone ringing which is a parallel sound because we would often refer to a bank being busy and people speaking on their phones which were happening in this scene. There are certain cuts from each character face one after the other and they were all extreme close-ups to show their expressions and the cuts were so fast it built the suspense  and all of a sudden the characters each wore a mask whilst no one even realized and one of the characters hit the security guard and pushed him to the floor whilst the other two pulled out their guns on the rest of the people in the bank. This particular scene was edited really fast and had various cuts and "shot reverse shot" which gradually built the scene what the audience was expecting.

One of the character then starts to walk around the bank in a very fast pace shouting his dialogue and shouting at the people in bank that they shouldn't act smart and that all their money is covered by the government and they are taking the governments money and no one needs to stop them in what they are doing ,the shots used in this particular action of the character moving around was a pan shot as well as a crane shot so it was right from the top and the camera was moving really fast indicating the movement of the person moving around and his speed he was moving with. The camera then zooms into the character who was walking around whilst he goes to the bank manager and grabs the key of his neck that leads them to the vault. The director then uses over the shoulder shot so as the protagonist walks opening each door the camera was also behind him covering just the shoulder.T he fact that only one key was used to open the doors suggested that the bank has a very easy security which can be broken down which implemented that the bank has a rubbish security system . The camera is then held still as he reaches to the vault and takes the money and puts it into the bank. Then one by one all the bags are filled money and handed to each of the characters in the team and they all leave the bank one by one whilst this is happening the camera focuses on their faces then the camera cuts to an office of the agents where they just find out about the bank robbery and everyone rushes out to the car and heads toward the bank. The camera focuses on the agents in the car and how serious they are and want to catch the robbers very badly the camera then cuts to outside the bank where the robbers are walking towards the car in a very natural way so that no one finds out. The pace overall is very fast and the cuts and transitions are also very fast creating and building the tension of the audience and leaving them with enigma codes. Just before the last robber is about the sit in the car gun firing starts and all of a sudden the action has started and a very intense gun scene starts where everyone is running from the danger. The director at this point focuses on the agents and the robbers and uses a shift reverse shot to show the audience the expressions of the characters.

film noir

Film Noir
A style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace. The term was originally applied (by a group of French critics) to American thriller or detective films made in the period 1944–54 and to the work of directors such as Orson Welles, Fritz Lang, and Billy Wilder.

Film noir of this era is associated with a low-keyblack-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. Many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Great Depression.

We can clearly see the black and white visual in this and the character costumes are very film noir-like

Sound video feedback and learner response

         Teacher feedback:

        WWW:

  • Outstanding piece of music
  • Cinematic scenes
  • great selection of clips
  • good ear for sound
         EBI:
  • haven't met brief properly
  • all of the video was contrapuntal

         Student feedback:

        WWW:
  • good example of parallel sound
  • music fits well with clips
  • good video choice
  • music created tension
  • music chosen for parallel clips was better than original

          EBI:

  • video too long
  • couldn't tell if first clips were contrapuntal
  • everything was parallel

I have effectively created a cinematic video with sounds that suit the scenes I selected very well. My music choice seems to create tension. I have shown a good ear for selecting music for my clips.

Learner response:

I believe one of the best clips was from Casey and Amber because the parallel sound was very well selected as it genuinely sounded like the music chosen from the movie. When I compare it to my video we both use parallel sound excellently however they effectively presented contrapuntal sound and that is where I did not do as well in.

Sound blog task

Funny Games (2001)

1. What is the director saying about the family from the choice of music played?

The use of music played at the start of the video is that they are of an upper higher class due to them listening to classical music which is categorised as being of a higher class audience. On top of that the use of having the family dressed in quite expensive looking clothes while listening to that music creates a sense of them being wealthy and posh.

2. How would you describe this use of music?

The very few first scenes start off as being diegetic and parallel as the music fits the appropriate scene and mis-en-scene shown. Originally the music is used as background music until the dialogue between the characters is audible as they now begin talking about the song as they try and guess what song it is and by doing this we continue to get the idea that they are upper class family that are also quite wealthy. Suddenly the music becomes non-diegetic and contrapuntal as rock music begins to play as they take out the CD, this goes against the whole plot of taking out the CD as we can’t hear them talk and we can now suddenly hear heavy rock music. The use of the change in music is useful as it does what was needed by making the audience questioning what is happening and confused as to why.

3. How do you think the narrative might develop?

Using the music we the audience can understand just from the opening scene that this film will not be your ordinary film and therefore makes us the viewer intrigued which is what the writer was aiming for in terms of a response from the audience. The use of music also gives the audience no hints about the plot as it has not really given anything away from the opening scene therefore the narrative and plot of the film is very compelling which draws and grips our attention even more due to the use of contrapuntal sound. This leads to the narrative potentially devolving very well due to the use of curiosity that it has provided the audience from the opening scene.

Clockwork Orange (2001)

1. Discuss the choice of music. Is it the kind of music you would expect for this scene?

When watching this scene I had originally anticipated a fast pace choice of song which would go with the violence and action scenes however the use of slow motion action scents mean slower choice of music causing a contrapuntal sound. This is because slow music isn't associated with violence however instead associated with romance movies or sad sombre areas of the film.

2. Why do you think the director used this piece of to go with action on the screen?

I think the director has specifically used slow and quite relaxing music and calming music so it is parallel with the speed of the scene. The action has been put into slow mo, and fast music therefore would not fit the music therefore making it contrapuntal to the scene. The use of the slow music makes the scene look more together and neat, it also reinforces the confusion of the actors as the attack has come as a complete shock.

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

1. What sounds do you hear? How do you they help to build up tension?

The creeks of the wood planks and his boots build up tension as they generate a sense of fear. The creeks of the windmill also creates the tension as it puts the audience in a kind of uncomfortable position as the noise is extremely high pitched. All the noises are diegetic which also builds up tension as the actors can also hear them as well. The clicking noise of machinery at 1:20 also builds up tension as it almost sounds like horses galloping and running faster and faster. The whimpering of the dog and the cracking of knuckles were all signs and signals of pain which could help build up tension as we begin questioning why the dog is in pain. The buzzing of the fly continuously makes us tense as we are questioning when he is going to kill it to therefore stop the buzzing noise.

2. Can you identify the sound bridge? What is the effect on the audience?

At 0:58 there is a sound bridge as we can hear the train on the tracks however we cannot actually see it. The sound of the train doesn't actually link to the scene at that point which creates tension as the long build up makes up question what's going to happen with the train further into the film (possibly a crash?)

Once Upon a Time in America (1984)

1. Discuss what sound is non-diegetic and diegetic?

The dialogue from the actors is diegetic as the other actors can hear what is being said it hasn't been edited in after recording. However the phone ringing is non-diegetic as the actors do not in fact hear the ringing as it has been edited in production. As well as the drum roll occurring in the background therefore is non-diegetic as the actors once again cannot hear it by use the viewer can hear it.

2. How does the director use the sound of the phone to link the narrative?

The narrator uses the phone to link the narrative effectively, as from the first scene throughout to the end of the phone ring is significant. At the beginning it appears as being non-diegetic as the actors can’t hear the phone ringing, therefore has been added during post production, as we travel through the scene the ringing of the phone becomes diegetic. This is added because the phone is actually ringing in the world of the film. This helps with narrative because we are able to identify the first part of the clips as memories and the ending is present day.

Star persona video feedback and learner response

WWW:
  • The image is really well-the medium close up works well.
  • music is effective-appropriate for time-lapse and lets the pictures do the talking.
  • In terms of editing and brief. Almost exactly 2 mins and the pace is solid.
  • good lighting
  • good attention to detail
  • show more final images
EBI:
  • In terms of mise-en-scene and the brief. Surely its more horror than insane asylum (or it is horror set in that location?)
  • perhaps a reflection of lack of experience in make-up but more of a spoof or parody horror feel here.
  • the camera should've been directed more towards my face
  • needs more final shots to see makeup

film poster analysis

1. I believe the film may have a bounty hunter in the future plot due to the concerned look on the mans face this links to the galactic background we see in combination with the futuristic buildings. lastly, we can see that there is a small spacecraft implying that the movie may have relations to space.

2. The genre of this film is definitely sci-fi this is because of the bright lights and the oddly structured building, also because of the space-craft we see, this reveals the movie is set in the future.

3. I believe the target audience is 18-30, I think this because of the dark colour scheme of the poster, it gives a sense of ambiguity with a dark nature.

1. Due to the title of the film, "Scary Movie", I would infer that the movie will have a murder story-line but due to the comedic looking people in the central image and the movie reference on the character wearing a green shirt that the film may make a mockery of horror movies.

2. I believe that the genre will be a horror-comedy-parody, the reason being is the title, which gives an implication of fear and terror. Furthermore, the reason why I think it may also be a comedy is because the lighting on the poster is very bright considering the movie has horror aspects. lastly, the movie may be a parody because of the reference on the girl on the right's shirt. The reference to a movie may imply the film is making a mockery of horror movies.

3. I believe the target audience is from 16-20 because all the characters on the poster seem to be physically mature. This strips the poster of any innocence.

1. From the fact that you cannot see the characters face on the poster I believe this will have a mysterious storyline to where there may be a potential murder involved.

2. I believe the movie will be a drama-mystery. I think this because, despite the mysterious character on the poster, the snowy environment looks somewhat peaceful. In addition, the title "uzak" translates to "distant" or "far". This could potentially indicate a distance in a relationship supporting the claim that the movie is a drama.

3. Lastly, I strongly believe the movie is aimed at an older audience being 25-40. The reason I believe this is because of the dull colour scheme which gives of a serious vibe.

  1. I think the storyline of this movie will be about a boy who overcomes his fears and anxious thoughts, mainly because of the self-explanatory title " I'm not scared" I can see the boy maturing in this movie and improving on himself.

2. The movie looks like a coming of age film or a teen drama. The colour scheme of the poster is fairly light implying that the movie will be somewhat refreshing without dark aspects in it. Secondly, the central image, being a boy does imply that the movie may have a childish aspect to it enforcing the fact that it may be a teen drama.

3. I strongly believe the movie will be aimed at a younger audience ranging from 10-16, this is mainly because of the character on the poster. We can see that he is younger which may relate to a lot of people on the younger side.

1. The dark lighting gives the film a sinister vibe also the title "sin city" gives implications of murder, violence and mystery. For these reasons, I believe the film will be about murders and detectives.

2. The genre of the movie will most likely be action, thriller due to the dark colour scheme which gives of a dark feeling.

3. The audience the film is aimed at is 18-25, because of the overall sinister feeling we get from the movie, we see that there is no innocence here.

1. I can immediately see the mise en scene which is pirate related, so I strongly believe this film will have a pirate storyline.

2. The genre may be an adventure as we usually relate pirates with adventure and "searching for gold". Also I can see a sunken pirate ship which gives connotations of action.

3. I think this film will be aimed at teenagers mostly as the rather pirate theme may seem to light-hearted to be for an audience over 18.

1. I believe the storyline will be about love, this is because; the central image displays 2 people a male and female back to back.
